Who we are

We turn science into large-scale, liquid electricity storage.

Born from academic excellence in electrochemistry and backed by leading investors, Kemiwatt is building safe, non-flammable, sustainable and cost-competitive long-duration energy storage for ports and tank storage operators.

Storing clean energy where it’s needed most

Our mission

Our mission is to make long-duration energy storage as natural to ports and terminals as storing liquid fuels used to be. By turning existing tanks into safe energy banks, we help port and tank storage operators decarbonise their operations, integrate more renewables, bypass grid congestion issues and unlock new sources of revenue, without relying, rare earth on scarce or hazardous materials.

Our story

From laboratory breakthrough to industrial environment

We provide digital experience services to startups and small businesses.

2014
Kemiwatt was created

Kemiwatt was created in 2014 as a spin-off from the Institute of Chemical Sciences in Rennes, where researchers developed a new generation of aqueous organic redox flow batteries using innovative organic molecules and recyclable electrolytes.

2017
Pioneering organic flow battery innovation

In 2017, the team built one of the first organic redox flow battery prototypes worldwide, followed the next year by an industrial demonstrator. These milestones were made possible by close collaboration between scientists, engineers and early investors.

Today
Long-duration storage for ports and industry

Today, Kemiwatt focuses this R&D heritage on large-scale, safe storage for ports, terminals and industrial clusters, where long-duration storage and asset reuse provide strong economic and environmental value.

Bridging science and industry

A team combining deep science and industry experience

The Kemiwatt team brings together experienced profiles in energy storage, electrochemistry, process engineering and industrial deployment. Leadership combines backgrounds in business development for energy storage, battery research, port and terminal energy transition and international industrial scale-up.

R&D teams include specialists in organic chemistry, electrochemistry, process design and system integration. They work closely with academic laboratories and industrial suppliers to continuously improve performance, lifetime and recyclability.

Investors and partners

Long-term support from leading investors

Kemiwatt is backed by investors who share a long-term vision of the energy transition. Early financing rounds were led with Ouest Valorisation, GO Capital, Demeter and private industry business angels.

In 2025, Kemiwatt welcomed two strategic investors from the terminal and maritime industries, Stolt Ventures and Impact Océan Capital,  to accelerate its commercial deployment in ports and tank storage and to expand internationally.

Kemiwatt also collaborates with Tier 1 industrial partners on key components and is recognised within the liquid storage and port sectors as an innovative energy storage player.

Sustainable impact by design

Impact and sustainability

Kemiwatt’s technology is designed to support a more sustainable energy system:

  • Organic electrolytes without heavy metals, rare earths or precious metals
  • Fully water-based, non-flammable chemistry suitable for industrial environments
  • Systems that can be dismantled and whose electrolytes can be recycled at end of life after 20 year or 20 000 cycles
  • A business model built on reusing existing tanks and infrastructures rather than constructing entirely new assetsBy helping ports and terminals integrate more renewables, reduce emissions and reuse their assets, Kemiwatt contributes to the decarbonisation of logistics and industrial value chains.
